Chelsea ‘could sell’ Cole Palmer to Man Utd if the price is right, according to former Blues player Pat Nevin.
Speaking to BestBettingSites, Nevin said a lot will depend on Palmer’s willingness to move to Old Trafford:
“I don’t think the question comes down to whether Chelsea would sell. They would. Would Manchester United want it? They probably would. Would money be difficult? No, they would probably sort it out. Chelsea are a commercial club. They bought Cole Palmer, and they could sell him for a huge profit, and that’s what they’re doing. Chelsea fans would be absolutely gutted because they love him, rightly so.”
“There have been concerns about his consistency and his injuries. It really comes down to one thing. It doesn’t depend on the clubs, it depends on him. Does Cole Palmer want to play for Manchester United? That’s it. Nobody knows except Cole Palmer.”
“If he says Manchester United, I’ve heard hints that he was a United fan when he was a kid. I don’t know if that’s true, but I heard it was his team when he was a kid. It’s a draw. When you look at what United are doing at the moment and how they’re playing, and the possibility that you could actually have stability at Manchester United, it becomes a temptation. With Michael Carrick, it’s like a different place. It’s totally different.”
Man Utd will need to qualify for the Champions League first
Any approach for Palmer would likely depend on Carrick making the top five ahead of Chelsea. Not only would this increase the Red Devils’ transfer budget, but it would also make the player’s decision to leave Stamford Bridge easier.
If he is, as some suggest, keen to return to Manchester, the prospect of playing for a team with Champions League football could tip him into signing for United.
Palmer’s arrival would push Fernandes towards the exit door
This is all pure speculation at this point. There is no indication that the Chelsea attacking midfielder is a top target at the moment, but if a deal becomes viable it would leave question marks over the club captain’s future.
Bruno Fernandes and Palmer prefer to play as a No.10, and the former has raised doubts over his future in recent months. Earlier this season he expressed his disappointment that the club was ready to sanction his transfer to Saudi Arabia last summer. He also confirmed that he would meet after the World Cup and decide whether he wanted to stay at the club.
