Man Utd are actively pursuing Sporting Lisbon left-back Maxi Araujo as he competes in the World Cup, according to reports in Portugal.
Save claims the Red Devils had a representative in the stands for Uruguay’s 2-2 draw against Cape Verde earlier this week.
The United scout was reportedly very impressed with what he saw when Araujo scored the equalizer and provided the assist for Uruguay’s second goal.
The 26-year-old also played a pivotal role in the group stage opener, having found the net in the 1-1 draw against Saudi Arabia.
Man Utd have been watching him for a while
It is believed that the Red Devils first took note of his performances for Sporting during the 2024/25 season, and they have been following him ever since.
However, following the departure of Tyrell Malacia at the end of his contract, this summer seems to be the right time to intensify their interest in Araujo.
Competition for Luke Shaw is necessary. The 30-year-old will not be able to play every match as he did last campaign, with the Manchester club’s return to the Champions League.
Araujo’s positional flexibility is another key asset. He can also be deployed as a winger if and when necessary.
How much would Araujo cost?
Save report that although the Uruguay international has a release clause in his contract worth €80m (£69m), he could be let go by Sporting for a fee closer to €60m (£52m).
Even that valuation has put off some potential suitors, including Atletico Madrid, but United could be willing to do a deal at that price.
Other Premier League teams including Chelsea and Tottenhamare also reportedly keen on Araujo, so Michael Carrick’s side may need to act fast if they are to win the race for his signature.
